I am a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise working with individuals, couples, families and groups. I have written extensively about various aspects of psychotherapy and conducted training throughout Europe and the United States. My approach is highly interactive and incorporates an optimistic perspective, as well as a focus on competence, support, and increased awareness as important ingredients for change. My approach to psychotherapy is outlined in a number of articles on this website.
Anyone wishing an appointment can email me at josephmelnick10@gmail.com or call me at (207) 772-0778 to arrange a brief conversation, during which we can discuss the reasons why you are seeking psychotherapy, questions you may have, fees, and insurance issues. Sessions are scheduled as needed. Individual and couple sessions are usually 50 minutes, family sessions are 1.5 hours, and group sessions are 2 hours.
Billing and Insurance
Most outpatient insurance covers psychotherapy treatment with a clinical psychologist. However, the extent of the coverage varies, and I do not belong to some panels. I do take most Medicare insurance. It is the client’s responsibility to understand the financial and limiting conditions of coverage. It is also the client’s responsibility to obtain the forms and fill out the patient portions. My office will complete the rest and submit it. If there are any questions, please contact Desirae, my office manager, at (207) 772-1559.
IRS
Therapy can be deducted as a medical expense. Canceled checks will usually serve as a receipt.
Confidentiality
All therapeutic interactions will be kept confidential except where it might involve potential physical harm to self or others. Under these conditions I am legally obligated to break confidentiality.
